Three pear tree saplings that are genetically identical to the Fowler Pear Tree were planted Oct. 23 in Mukilteo.
Two saplings were planted at Rosehill Community Center and one at Pioneer Cemetery. The city will soon install commemorative plaques at each of the sites.
Members of the Mukilteo Way Garden Club approached city staff about planting the saplings after Bill Davis of the Western Washington Fruit Research Foundation let them know that the “clone” cuttings he took a year and a half ago were ready to be transplanted.
The Fowler Pear Tree was planted circa 1863 by Mukilteo co-founder Jacob D. Fowler. The tree is now 150 years old, and still bears fruit. It is likely the oldest living pear tree in Washington state.
